A botanic garden, also known as a conservatory is a garden designed specifically for the display, collection, and maintenance of a range of flowering plants, often planted to demonstrate their botanical names or to enhance the look of the garden. Botanic gardens are located on private land owned by the botanist. They can be built into an existing structure or be a new build on a deck, porch, or balcony. Many homeowners and landscape designers construct such a garden as a means of increasing the value of their property and as a way of adding a certain atmosphere to the area. In addition to enhancing the value of the home, creating a garden can also provide the enjoyment of growing and gardening in the comfort of one’s own home.
Botanic gardens are designed and shaped as part of a plan that also includes seating, eating, and socializing areas. In some cases, botanic gardens may be located in areas away from residential areas to provide the gardener with a sense of being removed from the daily hustle and bustle of city life. Some people refer to botanic gardens as “green spaces”. Botanic landscapes are designed to include plants from a variety of different environments which provide varying levels of climate and color.
Since the 1970s, botanists and conservationists have worked hard to create parks or “gardens” where plants and animals can thrive without conflict with humans or other wildlife. The main goal of such a park/garden is to sustain biodiversity through the conservation of species. This can be done by providing an abundance of plants and animals or specific types of animals and plants that do not compete with each other. This is usually accomplished through careful planning and implementation of community partnerships, government policies and laws, education, and citizen science activities.
The first botanical gardens were created to support scientific research. In the past few decades, botanists and conservationists have provided scientific research on a wide variety of topics including climate change, water availability, insect populations, land management, and landfills. By working closely with these types of specialists, scientists have been able to provide the information needed by policymakers and environmental organizations to protect our environment. Many botanists and conservationists around the world are very passionate about their work. They constantly strive to enhance the information that is available to the general public.
Throughout the world, botanic gardens play an important role in supporting scientific research. There are hundreds of millions of different plants and animals. It would be impossible for scientists to discover all of the living collections if they were not to research each one. Botanic gardens often have an incredible range of plant life that is not only beautiful but also has valuable data that can be used for scientific research. An excellent example of this is the Amazon Rainforest botanic gardens in Brazil.
In 2021, the United States planted more than twenty thousand acres of primary and secondary shade trees in botanic gardens. Birds, amphibians, mammals, and insects make up the majority of the primary plant species. These species are being used in the field to help determine how environmental conditions and threats are impacting plant communities. An example of this is the determination of the spatial extent of the three extinction thresholds that have been placed across the country.
Secondary shade trees are primarily used in botanical gardens to help reduce the amount of heat created by western red and purple winds. In the past, it was necessary to compensate for the loss of birds that were the primary food source for some birds in the canopy trees. Through the efforts of botanic gardens, it has become possible for birds to survive. In turn, this has helped the conservation of other species in the area.
The creation and protection of parks within our nation’s National Parks have been a priority for scientists for many years. However, many of these parks will probably not be managed or exist shortly due to the current lack of scientific research and information on the species found within the parks. There is a need to recognize the importance of such species for future conservation efforts. As we move into the future, we must be fully aware of what is going on and work towards protecting all types of wildlife that exist throughout the world.
